Workplace Violence: What Qualifies?
Here’s a quote that has always stuck in my head:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” — Fred Rogers
Luckily, we were able to feature one of these helpers on a webinar on January 24th. Carol Fredrickson, from Violence-Free, joined us to give a presentation called “Workplace Violence: Warning Signs, Red Flags & What Puts You at Risk!” During her presentation, she showed this slide, which emphasizes the kinds of violence that can occur in the workplace. Perhaps the most stunning information on the slide is the identification of a few acts that aren’t violent in a literal sense, but rather on a psychological level.
All of these, some obvious, some not so much, qualify as violence in the workplace. Carol’s advice should you spot this in your office? If you SEE something, SAY something!
I highly urge you to watch Carol’s entire webinar, and to take the time to evaluate the policies you have in place to prevent these actions from even coming close to happening.
