The Five A’s of Great Employees
by Eric Swenson
In a recent free HR webinar, I discuss how ability is not enough. Ability – or competency – generally gets defined as a person’s capability of getting a task done properly. In my experience, this is the sole attribute hiring managers look at in determining whether or not to hire. Don’t believe me? Then explain to me what a resume does for you. Even a well-constructed resume will focus only on ability, when at best, ability is about 20% of what comprises a great employee.
Last year, the CEO of a bank asked me a simple question about hiring, I didn’t have a good answer. The question: What do you look for in a potential employee? After a career conducting thousands of interviews and hundreds of hiring decisions, I was flabbergasted that I didn’t have a ready answer for him.If qualifications are the great tangible, then it’s the intangibles that separate the good from great.
Defining the intangibles isn’t easy. But after interviewing thousands of job candidates in my career, I eventually was able to identify four intangibles that completely disrupt the traditional methods of hiring and managing employees.
The reality today is the significant number of substantially qualified candidates who need just a bit more specialized training or experience. If you find a candidate who has those qualifications (perhaps 60% to 70% of your desired criteria), and they possess the 5 A’s then the cost and time of training becomes a mere minor obstacle to a highly successful – long term – hire. As a bonus, those employees usually are less expensive to hire than the 100 “percenters”.
