Ascentis recently hosted a free HR webinar titled “Virtually There: Managing a Modern Remote Workforce.” This free HR webinar recording is approved for 1.0 free SHRM credit, 1.0 free HRCI credit, and is available to watch here. In this free HR webinar, Nov Omana–current CEO and founder of Collective HR Solutions–speaks on economic, generational, and geographic pressures causing organizations change their “office-centric” cultures into “virtual” teams of remote employees. Additionally, Nov has written the below blog post reflecting on words frequently used in the HR industry.
Nov Omana, CEO, HRIP
As this year winds down and I reflect on the many trade shows and vendor demonstrations I have attended, I find three words so overused that they have lost both my interest and my support: engagement, culture, and innovation.
Now if I trouble you by my cynical perspective, it’s founded on the premise that there is nothing unique nor magical about any of these words. These words have been around forever and yet most vendors feel they have the silver bullet to managing these topics. Furthermore, most HR folks seem to want to believe them, since it seems to plague our attempts to improve any of them.
Perhaps I have missed something as I am not an HR practitioner. However, I feel that based on my managerial and business owner experience the goal of these words seems to be relatively simple. Employers should understand what motivates an individual. They should also give individuals the opportunity to manage their environment by satisfying their inner drives and creating an optimal engagement.
Surveying bodies of individuals provides macro indications to what is needed—but what happened to just talking to an individual to understand what “makes them tick”? We have shied away from asking such questions like: “what grabs your interest”, “what don’t you like”, “how do you manage your time”, and “what can we do to improve the environment or put work and life in balance?” Systems won’t answer these questions.
Simple questions with an honest attempt to meet needs can make the biggest differences, in my experience. And the individualization of approaches appeals very much to the person, as opposed to the more generalized programs we have put in place. Does this spell chaos in execution? Not really from my perspective. Through this engagement strategy, you will develop a conducive culture that will lead to innovation.
